What does Charlotte beer taste like right now?

Across the 740 beers on tap in Charlotte with a taste profile we trust (as of October 13, 2026), the average beer scores 3.5 for hops, 3.9 for malt, 1.0 for roast, 3.6 for sweetness, 0.7 for sourness and 4.7 for body on a 0–10 scale. The most common flavor tags are citrus (34% of beers), crisp (30% of beers) and smooth (27% of beers).

How are the brewery flavor profiles calculated?

Each beer on tap gets six 0–10 scores (hops, malt, roast, sweetness, sourness, body) and a set of flavor tags, read from the brewery's own description of that beer. A brewery's profile is the plain average of those scores across its beers on tap. Only profiles built from a real description are used; ciders, seltzers and other non-beer drinks are left out. The scores are estimates of perceived intensity, not lab measurements.

Why isn't every Charlotte brewery included?

A brewery needs at least 8 beers on tap with a usable taste profile, making up at least 50% of its current list, so a short or mostly undescribed tap list can't top a ranking. As of October 13, 2026, 43 of the 74 breweries with beer on tap qualify. The rest have short lists or menus without beer descriptions, where we would only be guessing from the style name.

How often is this updated?

The page is rebuilt from the live tap lists every time HopCLT imports new menus, and at least once a day, so a brewery's profile shifts as it rotates beers on and off.

Methodology

Which beers. Every beer currently on tap at an active Charlotte-area brewery HopCLT tracks, counted once even if it pours at several taprooms. Ciders, hard seltzers, kombucha and other non-beer drinks are excluded.

Which profiles. Each beer's six scores and flavor tags are extracted from the brewery's own description of it. We use the same gate as the taste profiles shown on beer pages: a profile built from a real description, with confidence of at least 0.6. That leaves 740 of 1,067 beers.

Style-only guesses are left out. 265 more beers have a profile inferred only from their style name ("it's an IPA"), which is a style average, not a description of that beer. Counting them would leave the #1 brewery unchanged on 6 of 7 lists and the brewery rankings nearly identical (rank correlation 0.89–0.98), but it pulls breweries toward the middle (the differences between them shrink by up to 12%) and would add 18 fingerprints that mostly restate a brewery's style mix.

Which breweries. A brewery needs at least 8 profiled beers on tap, making up at least 50% of its list, so a short or mostly undescribed tap list can't top a ranking. Its fingerprint is the plain average of each score across those beers. Rankings compare averages rounded to one decimal; breweries with the same rounded average share a position.

What the numbers mean. Scores describe how strongly a quality comes through (a West Coast IPA is about 8 for hops, a dry stout about 7 for roast), not how good a beer is. They're estimates, not lab measurements, and a brewery's average changes as it rotates beers.
