Benford Brewing started in 2012 as Boxcar Brewery but changed its name to honor the Benford family legacy when they discovered the original name was taken. Located on a working farm about 40 miles south of Charlotte (50 minute drive), this is South Carolina's only agricultural brewery. The brewery name honors multiple generations: Great-Great Grandfather Benford O'Neal, Great Uncle Benford George O'Neal, Grandfather Paul Benford O'Neal, and Uncle Robert Benford O'Neal. Irish family members migrated through Charleston Harbor in the late 1800s. The farm brewery features a 30-barrel brewing system and is blessed with pure well water from three natural springs on the property - the key to brewing great beer. Owner Bryan O'Neal emphasizes using only natural-based ingredients and staying true to traditional brewing methods. The rural setting offers a warm, soothing atmosphere with a dog-friendly farm environment, lots of outdoor seating, and the ultimate man-cave brewery interior. Visitors often describe it as stepping into a Nicholas Sparks novel with authentic small-town Carolina charm.
